Guji Mane Diaspora Collection // Womxn King: MAPENDO WOMEN SOUTH KIVU, DR CONGO WASHED PROCESS /// a mighty peace junt
The connection between African American women and Congo is as strong asĀ it is unexplored. As theĀ Belgian Congo gained its independence from Belgium in 1960, Ā its first Prime Minister, Patrice Lumumba, traveled to America to recruit African-Americans to help him build the young nation. Dr. Yvonne Seon Chappelle, Dave Chapelleās mother, was among the African-American leaders that accepted his invitation and she served in his government as secretary of the Inga Dam project.
This coffee celebrates and seeks to expand thatĀ connection. Grown by the all women Mapendo Cooperative, exported and imported through the amazing Might Peace team,Ā roasted by our black women roasting program hereĀ in Memphis tn, and presented withĀ graphic designĀ by Renata Henderson, our head roaster.Ā
