The connection between African American women and Congo is as strong as it is unexplored. As the Belgian Congo gained its independence from Belgium in 1960,  its first Prime Minister, Patrice Lumumba, traveled to America to recruit African-Americans to help him build the young nation. Dr. Yvonne Seon Chappelle, Dave Chapelle’s mother, was among the African-American leaders that accepted his invitation and she served in his government as secretary of the Inga Dam project.

This coffee celebrates and seeks to expand that connection. Grown by the all women Mapendo Cooperative, exported and imported through the amazing Might Peace team, roasted by our black women roasting program here in Memphis tn, and presented with graphic design by Renata Henderson, our head roaster.
