Lulo Viche: 60hr lulo co-ferment castillo // named for the only ancestral Afro-Colombian drink protected by law, sourced from our fam, the Dulcey Family, in El Tambo, Colombia.

THE STORY:

Viche is a sugarcane spirit distilled by Afro-Colombian communities on Colombia's Pacific coast for centuries. For generations it was criminalized — treated as contraband. In 2021, Colombia passed Law 2158, the "Viche Law," recognizing viche as ancestral cultural heritage protected under Black community sovereignty. It is the only ancestral drink in Colombia protected by law.

We named this coffee after it. Not as aesthetic branding — the name places this cup in a lineage of Black Colombian fermentation traditions the state tried to erase and the community refused to surrender.

The lulo tree was already on Nacederos Farm. Fernando Dulcey walked past it every day. Then he had an idea. Sixty hours later, the cup opened — something completely new, made entirely from what was already there.

THE COFFEE:

Lulo (Solanum quitoense) is almost unknown outside Colombia and Ecuador — kiwi-textured, lemon-bright, reminiscent of green mango.

60-hour co-fermentation with fresh lulo pulp. Not flavored — co-fermented: the fruit's microbes and sugars fermented alongside the coffee's own.
